Weeknote #4 (26 May-01 June 2025)

· Weeknote

A short week, because of the bank holiday Monday.

Quite an empty week for me; I’ve been a bit down on myself (and life, and everything) since coming back from my trip to West Sussex last week. Picking up now, though.

Learn

Having moved about quite a bit for work, I have amassed a number of pensions. This week I finally got round to rounding them up and getting valuations etc. Ideally, I could still do with a lottery win, but it’s not as gloomy an outlook as I was anticipating.

Not so much a learning, but I enjoyed listening to the WB-40 podcast episode from 2020 about Artefact Cards.

I gleaned an interesting insight that I hadn’t considered before:

“Horizontal for play, vertical for display” — John Willshire, Smithery. Inventor or the Artefact Cards

Which summarises how people are more naturally disposed to move things around and organise them if they’re on a table top, and less inclined if they’re on a wall. With obvious ramifications for how effective the likes of Miro are. All-in-all, a very interesting and insightful episode.

Write

3 posts on LinkedIn - nothing earth-shattering.

One post published on The Ode Map.

I drafted a new poem on Saturday - ‘Remembrance’ (working title). I was planning to work more on ‘Reminiscence’, but this new poem just popped out of my head in one go, so I just ran with it. I think ‘Reminiscence’ is going to be problematical and may fall by the wayside.

Work(-ish)

Applied for 3 roles. Got one ‘no’ from a previous application.

Started building my content management system in AirTable. Not a CMS; more like a content pipeline management system - a way to manage ‘things I want to talk about’ from idea, through subject matter, to potential format(s). Maybe it is a CMS and I’m just used to seeing them (and delivering them) as ‘web sites to publish content’, rather than ‘information stores to manage content’. More research needed here.

Caught up with a friend / ex-colleague. More inspiration for moving forward on one of my content subjects.

Interesting Elsewhere

I started reading “Paint my Name in Black and Gold†”, by Mark Andrews. It’s the history of The Sisters of Mercy, and I’m already loving it. Very well written.

Finalised my (personal) budget for June. I’m a massive YNAB†† fan - it’s made me good at financial planning / emergency planning / not being scared of money. I’ve been using it for several years. Heartily recommended.

Photos

A rare photo of me with a book. I was not asleep 😀.

A photo of my yard, showing a gnarly, old apple tree next to a newly cleaned, white wall that surrounds the yard.
