Sunburns and VAT Returns

Weeknote #7 (16-22 June 2025)

· Weeknote,Reflection

Hasn’t it been hot! Our cottage has a massive conservatory on the back (south-facing) that has basically been keeping the house (too) warm during the sunny spell. Judicious use of fans and curtains ensued. I definitely caught the sun a bit and have been feeling lethargic. A bit too hot to do any deep thinking (for me), so concentrated on ‘ideation’ (hate that word).

Spent some time preparing my accounts for my 3-monthly VAT return. Nothing to taxing (lol), thank goodness.

Went to see my daughter on Saturday, as it’s my youngest grandson’s third birthday soon. Always great to see them all, and the weather was suitably warm and sunny, but not too hot to make use of the garden. I would like to see them more often, but it’s a long day (~3 hours drive each way). My grandson’s paternal grandmother is over from Poland for a few weeks, too, which is great, and we had a chance to get to know each other a little better (though she has little English and I have even less Polish).

Learnings

Found out about slash commands in ChatGTP. Although they’re not a real thing - it’s just a way to create shortcuts for repetitive tasks. I created a ‘notelet’ task that creates a number of short CTAs based on some content - blog post or whatever.

The more I see of n8n in action, the more I want to get into it.

Writing

2 LinkedIn posts & some comments on others’ posts.

Completed the poem ‘Remembrance’. Although the name is going to have to change.

Published “Why ’Earworms’?” on The Ode Map.

Received a rejection email for a poem I submitted to a competition. Hey ho.

Work(-ish)

Applied for a role that looks interesting (FinTech).

Created a quick mind map of my (very nascent) thoughts regarding LLM Coding / AI coding assistants.

Yet more refinements to my ‘Subject Matter Management System’ in AirTable. A new interface and some forms. Bit by bit it improves, as my needs evolve.

Took some actions from the GovCamp Cymru meeting (Friday) and started working through those.

Interesting elsewhere

My son found a new car. We went to see it and take it for a test drive, and ended up putting down the deposit. Hope to pick it up soon.

Watched:

A couple of episodes of series 2 of “Fubar” (Amazon Prime). It’s not that good. But I feel compelled to watch it.

A couple of episodes of “Clarkson’s Farm” [Series 4] (Amazon Prime). See above. My son enjoys it, and so it’s an opportunity for us to watch something together.

Watched the rest of series 1 of “The Chelsea Detective” (U). I really enjoyed this. Just the right mix of drama, suspense and humour.

Listened to:

The 100th episode of “Add to Playlist” (BBC Sounds). Always interesting and a great way to find new music. Although not so much in this particular episode.

“Long Season - Live”, by ‘Fishermans’. This was recommended to me by friend and ex-colleague, Sam, and it’s absolutely marvellous.
